7 simple ways to improve your small business’ online presence without breaking the budget

With many businesses using the same old tried and tested strategies to find and keep customers, those who are able to establish an online presence that clearly communicates who they are, why they exist, and why it matters will find it almost easy to rise to the top of their industry. More simply put, it’s the sum of a person’s experience when they first interact with you or your online presence. This includes everything from how your website summary text appears in the search results window to how helpful your site is once they follow the link. 

If they click on your site and it takes too long to load, then the user is going to go straight back to Google to find another company whose website is much better and loads quickly, and you’ll lose out on a potential customer. Or, if they land on your site and it loads quickly but they have a hard time finding the information they need, they are likely to leave and try someone else. 

This is why it’s so important to make the user experience a priority. This doesn’t just apply to websites, either. An outstanding user experience applies to any software, platform, or app you’re using to communicate with your audience. Companies have gone to great lengths to offer customized features to make this a smooth process for both the clients and the company.

No one wants to use a website that requires the “pinch and zoom” on their phones. Create valuable and engaging content

If you do not have valuable and engaging content on your website, no amount of great user experience or mobile-friendly design will help you grow your reach.

For example, I’m a member of my local Chamber of Commerce and they provide great ways for me to be involved, even if I can’t always attend every event (especially now in 2020). I also regularly engage in social networking but in an intentional way. I find Facebook groups to be a great way to find like-minded people from whom I can learn and share ideas. I also regularly reach out to people who serve a similar audience to mine and find ways to partner with them. Instead of viewing them as competitors, I look at them as ways to provide my audience even more value which only serves me well in the long run. 

Be aware of your competitors

Speaking of competitors, a good way to improve your online presence is to always be aware of what your competitors are doing. They may be trying something different that could be a good strategy for your business. On the other hand, they may be doing something that isn’t working and this can also be beneficial for you, to avoid making similar mistakes. 

Being competitive and following what your industry peers are doing can help provide you with content ideas and new strategies to implement. By researching your competitors you’re better able to see if there is a gap in your industry that can be filled, and stay one step ahead of what they are doing.
